Cory Barlog Has Five More God of War Games Mapped Out in His Head

God of war future

If you’re anything like us, you’ve finished God of War and have been left wanting more, wondering what comes next. On a recent episode of the Kotaku Splitscreen podcast, Cory Barlog revealed that he has five more God of War games mapped out in his head. While far from set in stone, it’s no surprise that Barlog has the God of War future planned. It would be virtually impossible to set up the kind of reveals and payoffs that future games are sure to bring otherwise.

Does this mean we’re actually going to get five more games? Not likely, but it’s reassuring to know that the future of the series is being kept in mind as they develop each individual title. God of War sets up numerous directions that the studio could take in the future, even if Barlog doesn’t helm them himself. They’ve already talked about possible other mythologies to explore, but it looks like we’ll be staying with Norse mythology for the foreseeable future. In fact, by saying five more games, Barlog could even be indicating eventually moving into another mythology by the fourth or fifth one.

Does this mean that it will take another 25 years to get the complete story? Barlog doesn’t think so. God of War took five years to develop because of its radical reinvention. Releasing new games in the series shouldn’t take nearly as long now that they have the formula they want to use. Remember that there were six games released (if you include the PSP titles) between 2005 and 2013, which is only eight years. It was only two or three years between each of the main numbered console games and Ascension.

Minor Spoilers for God of War Follow

So what could the future of God of War games entail? We haven’t even met some of the biggest bads in Norse mythology yet, with many of them only being referenced. While we’ll definitely continue the story that was started in this God of War, there’s a good chance we could find ourselves going backwards too. Many of the non-numbered God of War games exist outside of the main timeline, and it’s possible that future titles could actually look backwards for inspiration, better connecting the end of God of War III to God of War PS4.

The secret ending hints at the future of the series, but there are a lot of questions we have about the past (and a lot of Mimir’s tales indicate that time isn’t quite as linear as one might expect within this mythology. Over the next decade, we could see a God of War future that both pays off reveals made in this game, and answers the unanswered questions about connections between Kratos’s tragic Greek ending and his slow redemption in Norse mythology.

If you like Easter eggs, God of War has a number of hidden things, from a secret item that was discovered through Norse runes in the Stone Mason Edition, to an epic Avengers: Infinity War reference that lets you wield the Infinity Gauntlet.

Are you surprised that Barlog has the future narrative lines mapped out for five more games? What do you hope that God of War future titles explore?

There’s an Avengers: Infinity War Easter Egg in God of War, Wield the Infinity Gauntlet

God of War Avengers infinity war easter egg thanos infinity gauntlet infinity stones

Releasing only a week before what is now the biggest movie debut ever, God of War holds a pretty cool Easter egg for Avengers: Infinity War. There are a number of items in Sony Santa Monica’s game that are clearly references to the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet. Six enchantments in God of War correspond with each of the six Infinity Stones.

  • Andvari’s Soul is the Soul Stone
  • Njord’s Temporal Stone is the Time Stone
  • Eye of the Outer Realm is the Space Stone
  • Ivaldi’s Corrupted Mind is the Mind Stone
  • Asgard’s Shard of Existence is the Reality Stone
  • Musphelheim Eye of Power is the Power Stone

The perks and bonuses that each stone grants to Kratos while equipped is equivalent to its theme (the time stone slows enemies, etc.) There is also a talisman called the “Shattered Gauntlet of Ages,” which is a reference to the infinity gauntlet wielded by none other than the mad titan Thanos. The description of the gauntlet reads “An ancient relic of Hel deemed too powerful to remain whole, fragments of its former strength lie scattered throughout the realms.” There is no other description of what the item actually does when activated, and trying to use its power seemingly doesn’t do anything.

Simple Easter eggs and references weren’t enough for Santa Monica Studio though! They actually made the Shattered Gauntlet of Ages functional. Equip any three of the six “Infinity Stone” enchantments into God of War’s Infinity Gauntlet and you can shoot purple projectiles out of your fist. Check out the video below to see it in action.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a lot of ties to Norse mythology, with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor being one of the main Avengers and much of its mystical mythology rooted in Asgard, the nine realms, and other Norse legends. There are many other less obvious ties between God of War and Infinity War, but for fear of spoiling either the game or the movie, I’ll leave those for you to discover.

This isn’t the first secret to be found in Sony Santa Monica’s lauded game. Last week, players discovered that the physical map included in the Stone Mason Edition contained secret runes that led to a hidden item in the game. If you’ve been playing God of War and want to make sure you get to see the full ending, check out our spoiler-free guide on how to see that. We’ve also talked about how God of War proves old gamer habits die hard.

What do you think of the God of War Avengers: Infinity War Easter egg? Have you equipped Kratos with the Infinity Gauntlet and found all of the Infinity Stones yet?

New Capcom E3 Details Hint at a Fighting/Wrestling Game for PlayStation 4

Capcom E3 Games

With the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) event just weeks away, it’s common for vague game announcements to pop up everywhere. Such details are a surefire way to get players excited about their favorite franchises and game studios, after all.

This brings us to some information that recently surfaced from Capcom, the guys behind some of the world’s most well-known gaming properties. According to an E3-related page, the company is set to showcase at least two unknown games based on two grouped categories, with one of them categorized as a fighting/wrestling title for the PlayStation 4.

Now, most gamers already know that Capcom is hard at work on Mega Man 11, as well as a Resident Evil 2 remake. But considering these are clearly not wrestling titles, what could Capcom possibly be working on?

The company once released a wrestling game known as Saturday Night Slam Masters back in the early 1990s, which makes us wonder if the studio is releasing the long-forgotten title for a new generation of gamers.

In an age of remakes, revivals, and compilations, it wouldn’t be far-fetched if certain gems make it to the popular gaming event. Games like Shaq Fu and the various system revivals – including the popular NES Mini – could easily support the notion of Capcom jumping on the bandwagon.

We’re also wondering about those other titles, which are curiously not making it to Sony’s console (at least judging by the screenshot above). The PlayStation 4 is currently the most popular console out there, which makes us wonder whether Capcom truly intends on sticking to the system’s rivals.

Stay tuned as we look deeper into this bundle of joy and mystery. Meanwhile, what do you think Capcom has in stores at this year’s E3?

Call of Duty: Black Ops III Update Includes General Stability Fixes

black ops 3 update

Even though Call of Duty: Black Ops III has been out for a couple of years now, that doesn’t stop the folks over at Treyarch from patching up the game when it needs updating. Today, they announced a brand new update for the game that, while not including anything new, fixes a ton of stability issues and various problems players have found on some of the multiplayer maps.

For the full update list, check out below courtesy of Treyarch:

GLOBAL

General

  • General stability updates.
  • Fixed an issue where some downloadable Multiplayer and Zombies maps were not playable offline.

MULTIPLAYER

Maps

  • Redwood Snow
    • Fixed miscellaneous collision issues and exploitable locations.

Game Modes

  • Infected
    • Fixed an issue where the end of game victory banner might display the wrong color.

ZOMBIES

GobbleGums

  • The Whimsical GobbleGums Projectile Vomiting and Newtonian Negation will now be available to owners of the a la carte Gorod Krovi and Revelations maps, respectively.

For even more Call of Duty: Black Ops III, check out a brief snippet from our review of the game below:

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is an insanely full featured game. If code was a physical thing, this game disc would be bursting at the seams with how much Treyarch has packed onto one Blu-ray. There’s a little something for everyone here. Players looking for a dark, rich narrative have the campaign. Competitive players have a whole new way to play in multiplayer. Fans of roguelikes and horde modes have Shadows of Evil. Switching between all of these modes is extremely easy too, and it never felt like I was stuck playing one thing or another. Player freedom, customization, and choice are central to every element. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 isn’t just a great Black Ops game. It isn’t just a great Call of Duty game. It’s a damn good game overall.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III is available now.

Remedy Will Finally Reveal Their New Game at E3 and It Will Include a PlayStation 4 Release

remedy project 7 announcement

Remedy Entertainment, developer of awesome titles like Max Payne and Quantum Break, will finally reveal their upcoming game at E3. Coined as Project 7, Remedy will finally reveal the actual name of the game on said event.

And yes, it will finally include a PlayStation 4 release.

We haven’t seen Remedy creating any PlayStation titles since 2001 and 2003, with Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne being their last footprints on the PS, respectively. Now, with the studio dropping their long-standing partnership with Microsoft, they announced that they are ready to bring their games into the public with a new publisher.

That publisher will be 505 games, known for publishing games like Abzu and Terraria, and will be showcasing Project 7 as part of their E3 lineup. This will give the media and interested players a “first hands-off look” at this mystery game.

Remedy currently has 2 games in development, and Project 7 is believed to be launched next year. According to the analysis of job listings and product descriptions for Project 7, the company will still keep its classic cinematic focus all the while incorporating some online elements akin to Destiny.

E3 will start on June 12 this year.

Command a total of 20 playable characters as they attack with unique traits and abilities. You may weaken enemies, blow them back, freeze them, or perform other offensive moves to succeed in each level.

This type of action also calls for online co-cop, and Gensokyo Defenders promises to deliver just that.

We can only hope and keep our fingers crossed, at this point. We’ll keep you updated on a potential Gensokyo Defenders English release date as more details become available. Meanwhile, grab yourself a copy when it releases on PS4 in Japan this May 1.

Here’s what they said when they made the delay:

This outlaw epic set across the vast and unforgiving American heartland will be the first Rockstar game created from the ground up for the latest generation of console hardware, and some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans.

The application allows players to use DualShock 4 or PS Move as a paint brush, which comes with a “robust feature toolset” and a simple interface, making it accessible for everyone. Users will find themselves painting in 3D space with multiple brushes at their disposal. The video above shows CoolPaintrVR in action and an official description below explains how it’ll work.

Use your PS Move controller like a brush, selecting from a variety of tools to express your creativity: brushes, tubes, geometric primitive shapes and particle emitters. Additionally – thanks to Wildbit Studios’ own RTSE technology – you can create a 3D model from a hand-drawn shape. It will have its own skeleton that you can manipulate, bone by bone, to help capture your desired stance.

CoolPaintrVR also offers advanced features for more experienced painters. You can even export your art via USB and continue working with third-party programs.

Wildbit Studios proudly announced that the application can sustain constant 120 frames-per-second “even under the most intense conditions.” The developer is currently working on a website that allows CoolPaintrVR‘s community to share its creations.

Any Bob Ross fans here?

Eidos Montreal Explains Why It’s Leading Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s Development

shadow of the tomb raider dev

Crystal Dynamics is the studio behind 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot and 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider. However, the upcoming title is being developed by Eidos Montreal, leading many to wonder why Crystal Dynamics isn’t spearheading development on a sequel to its 2015 release.

When Destructoid posed the question at a recent event, Eidos developers explained that the team wanted to do something different after finishing work on Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and that the studio’s experience with social and hub elements in Deus Ex is something that’ll “fit perfectly with Lara’s arc,” making Eidos the “perfect choice” for Shadow of the Tomb Raider‘s development.

“It’s like new flavors,” said narrative director, Jason Dozois. “You don’t want to always do the same thing. It gets stale. You want to switch it up and let a new team take over.”

“One of the strengths we believe in is the social experience, the hub experience like from Deus Ex,” added lead game designer, Heath Smith. “We wanted to bring that flavor. It fit perfectly with Lara’s arc, where she needs to go and grow. I think that’s why Eidos Montreal is the perfect choice.”

Eidos Montreal revealed that it has been collaborating with Crystal Dynamics for the past 8-9 years. The collaboration will continue with Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which releases on September 14 this year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Analyst Estimates Detroit: Become Human Will Sell Around 3-4 Million Copies

detroit become human sales

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has said that Quantic Dream’s upcoming title, Detroit: Become Human, is likely to sell around 3-4 million copies, which he believes is a good number considering the nature of the game and its exclusivity.

Speaking to GamingBolt, Pachter said that while he’s a fan of Quantic Dream’s projects, he believes that the studio’s games only appeal to a certain type of audience. “They are very much a more niche style of gameplay, they’re single player only, and we’re in this era now where the single player gamer is on one side, and the multiplayer gamer is on the other,” he explained. “I think Quantic Dream makes very dark, very thoughtful stories, but if you just want escapism, their games won’t be the best ones to play.”

Considering this, Pachter concluded that Detroit: Become Human isn’t “doing 15 million units, or outselling God of War.”

Quantic Dream’s 2010 hit, Heavy Rain, generated a considerable amount of profit for Sony and is estimated to have sold over 5 million copies thus far (including the PlayStation 4 release). An estimate of 3-4 million certainly doesn’t sound unreasonable for the upcoming title but how well the game is received only time will tell.

Detroit: Become Human releases on May 25. A demo is available now.

Dragon Ball FighterZ Vegito (SSGSS) DLC Officially Confirmed, Watch a Trailer

Back in March, a Dragon Ball FighterZ DLC update not only added Broly and Bardock to the game but also ended up revealing future DLC characters in a backup file. One of the leaked characters was Vegito (SSGSS), who has now been officially confirmed.

Bandai Namco Entertainment Taiwan seems to have leaked the trailer early, however. A post on its Facebook page announcing the character was subsequently removed but not before folks at ResetEra noticed, and YouTube user World Wide Weeb managed to copy and re-upload the trailer that you can see above. In case the video is removed, you can find a copy via ShonenGames below (we’ll add a video from the official channel once it becomes available):

In case you missed it, Fused Zamasu DLC was also leaked in the aforementioned backup file in March, a trailer for which we recently shared. No release date for the character has been announced yet but here’s an official overview:

Fused Zamasu is born from the fusion of Goku Black and Future Zamasu through Potara earrings. Thanks to the Super Dragon Balls, Fused Zamasu has gained ultimate power and invincibility making him the most devastating god of all time. His unlimited power also allows him to float in the air after his attacks and to move in any direction, making him a unique character to control. Fused Zamasu’s Ultimate Attack Divine Wrath, is a huge shot from his fingertip and is best used after a rush attack.

We’ll update our readers when further details about Vegito (SSGSS) DLC are released.

Dragon Quest Director, Jin Fujisawa, Leaving Square Enix After 18 Years

dragon quest director

Dragon Quest director, Jin Fujisawa, has revealed on Twitter that he’s leaving Square Enix. He apologized to fans for the sudden announcement, and said that he’s taking on a new challenge with a different company. However, he didn’t share any further details.

A translation of Fujisawa’s tweet (courtesy of Siliconera) can be read below:

I, Fujisawa, have resigned from Square Enix.

After resigning, I did continue writing for Fortune Tellers Academy, but currently I’m tackling a new challenge with a different company. I think I’ll be able to share more about the present condition on a separate occasion.

I truly apologize for the sudden announcement.

Fujisawa served Square Enix for 18 years. He started work on the Dragon Quest franchise in the late 90s as a Scenario Assistant for PlayStation 1’s Dragon Quest VII, which released in 2000. He continued working on the franchise in the same capacity until 2009, when he served as Battle Director for Nintendo DS title Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker. Fujisawa also directed Dragon Quest IX and Dragon Quest X.

We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. As far as Fujisawa’s next project is concerned, we’ll make sure to update our readers when he makes an announcement.

H1Z1 Developer, Daybreak, Suffers Layoffs as Link to Russian Oligarch Surfaces

h1z1 dev

H1Z1 and PlanetSide 2 developer Daybreak Game Company has suffered layoffs just days after it was reported that the company has links to Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg, whose assets the United States government froze earlier this week. Daybreak has denied the claims.

Vekselberg owns Renova Group, which is a subsidiary of Columbus Nova – a company that we’ve known as the owner of Daybreak. The studio denying any link to Columbus Nova is particularly surprising because former president John Smedley specifically mentioned the company in a press release in 2015. Additionally, screenshots taken from Daybreak’s website show references to Columbus Nova as well.

Daybreak offered the following explanation in a statement:

It was current executive chairman Jason Epstein, former senior managing partner of Columbus Nova that acquired Daybreak, not Columbus Nova itself. That distinction was never corrected in the past, so we are correcting that now.

Fast-forward to Thursday, when Daybreak confirmed to Gamasutra that it has laid off some staff members as part of internal restructuring.

Daybreak confirms we are realigning our workforce to better position our company for the future.  Because of this, we have had to make an extremely difficult decision to part ways with some of our employees across various disciplines at the studio.  We are doing everything we can to take care of each affected individual by providing them appropriate transition assistance.

Speculation now suggests that the two developments are related. Whether that’s true or not remains to be seen.

H1Z1 is set to enter open beta on PlayStation 4 on May 22.

Fortnite is Now the Biggest F2P Console Game of All Time

fortnite success

Fortnite has officially been crowned the biggest free-to-play console game of all time as it generates record-breaking revenues and monthly active users. A new report by SuperData Research reveals that the game earned $223 million across all platforms in March, which is a staggering increase of 73 percent from February! According to the company, the increase can partly be attributed to the release of a John Wick skin and new season of the Battle Pass.

Fortnite has also surpassed PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in terms of revenue and monthly active users on respective platforms. On iOS, the game claimed top spot in the United States during launch month, with SuperData noting that it has the “highest conversion rate of any free-to-play PC game in March.”

Elsewhere in the report, we’re told that Far Cry 5 has sold an estimated 2.5 million units digitally across all platforms. On consoles specifically, the game’s digital launch was up 500 percent from Far Cry Primal‘s. SuperData believes this not only indicates that the series is doing well but also that the digital market is continuing to grow.

Another highlight of the report is 2015’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III, which apparently still has an “impressive” audience. Activision’s continuous support for the game certainly helps.

You can find the full report on SuperData Research’s website.
