Red Dead Was Once a Capcom Project That Resembled ‘Really Bad Japanese Action Games’

red dead franchise

Chris Bratt of YouTube channel People Make Games has published an interesting video, which takes a look at the birth of Rockstar’s popular Red Dead franchise that initially began as a Capcom project.

Before being acquired and renamed Rockstar San Diego, developer Angel Studios was tasked with making a game called SWAT in which players controlled a SWAT team. Capcom executive Yoshiki Okamoto decided to change direction after watching a Western movie starring Ringo Starr. As a result, Red Dead was born.

Bratt interviewed Red Dead Revolver developer, Dominic Craig, who described the original game as something in between Sega’s Panzer Dragoon and “really bad Japanese action games.” The project was a bit of a mess, eventually leading Capcom to cancel it in 2003.

Rockstar had a little more faith and decided to rescue the game, however. After acquiring rights, the developer allowed its San Diego team to continue work on the project, which released in 2004 as Red Dead Revolver.

The video above is a little over twelve minutes and worth watching, so make sure to check it out.

Rockstar’s highly-anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2 will release on October 26, 2018 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. For more on the upcoming release, check out our recent coverage.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford’s Personal Assistant Allegedly Stole Millions From Him and His Wife

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford and his wife Kristy have allegedly lost millions of dollars after their former personal assistant defrauded them. According to Dallas News, 33-year old John Wright Martin – who has been in and out of jail on a variety of charges in the past – is now on the run.

The Pitchfords hired Martin as a personal assistant in 2014, with a starting salary of $45,000 per annum. While Randy runs Gearbox, Kristy operates a restaurant and coffee shop. It was during this employment that Martin regularly shopped at high-end luxury stores, drove expensive cars, bought designer clothes, and went on vacations to London and Italy. Interestingly, he also donated “tens of thousands of dollars” to charity.

Martin’s former friend, Matthew Worthen, called him a “master manipulator” and a “con artist.” He, too, alleges that he had $10,000 stolen from him.

By the time the Pitchfords discovered the fraud, Martin had already moved on from Gearbox to set up his own interior design business. Upon being confronted, he reportedly told the couple via his attorney that there was a “mix up,” and wrote them a check for $598,000, which bounced.

According to the Pitchford’s estimates, Martin has stolen nearly $3 million from them. Neither the couple nor Worthen expect to recover the full amount.

As for Martin, he agreed to Dallas News’ request for an interview via Facebook but didn’t follow through. “I can assure you there is much more to this story than me being charged for crimes I did not commit,” he said before he stopped responding to subsequent messages.

Villagers, Pillagers, and Cute Pandas Coming to Minecraft in Future Updates

minecraft updates

At Minecon Earth 2018, Mojang announced that Minecraft‘s next major update will be out sometime in 2019, and will introduce villagers and pillagers to the game.

Aptly titled “Village and Pillage,” the update will add eleven new villagers: Librarian, Butcher, Cleric Cartographer, Leatherworker, Fletcher, Shepherd, Farmer, Fisher, Armorer, Toolsmith, and Weaponsmith. Each villager will be unique depending on the biome that they’re in.

The Pillagers will be a group of people who can attack villagers with their beasts. Mojang’s Jens Bergensten said that the Pillagers “will raid in groups” alongside a new monster mini-boss.

While we wait for the content, Mojang will add cute cats and pandas to Minecraft via the 2018 holiday update. “We recorded real pandas in China to help create these,” said Bergensten.

In other news, Mojang announced an interesting new game called Minecraft: Dungeons – an adventure game for up to four players inspired by classic dungeon crawlers. Unfortunately, PC is the only platform confirmed so far but here’s hoping it’ll eventually make its way to consoles.

Bungie Has Filed a Trademark for Something Called ‘Matter’

bungie matter

Internet sleuths have discovered a trademark application for something called “Matter” filed by Destiny and Halo developer, Bungie Inc. It’s a very recent application, dated September 28, 2018.

The filing can be found on the European Union Intellectual Property Office’s (EUIPO) website, with the graphic representation above. The application is still under examination, and we have no further information except that it was filed under the computer games and entertainment services categories (9 and 41, respectively).

This development comes almost four months after Bungie announced that it has entered into a partnership with Chinese company NetEase, which has pumped $100 million into the studio. As part of the deal, NetEase owns a minority stake in Bungie and a seat on its Board of Directors.

“Our long-term goal is to become an entertainment company that sustains many worlds simultaneously – Destiny and new worlds to come,” Bungie explained back in June. “We’re excited to announce that we’ve entered into a new partnership with NetEase to help us explore new directions. With their industry expertise, they’ll empower us to build new worlds and invite players, new and old, to join us there.”

Bungie hasn’t made anything official yet but we won’t be surprised if Matter turns out to be its new IP.
