Bandai Namco has released a strange, but fun, video as part of the marketing for October 2018’s Soulcalibur VI. In this video, Soulcalibur VI Producer Motohiro Okubo and United States Olympic Gold Medalist Miles Chamley-Watson get together for some fencing, both in real life and within the confines of the latest entry in Bandai Namco’s weapons-based fighter.
Let’s watch.
The video is filmed almost documentary-style. It starts with Chamley-Watson talking about fencing, particularly how he got into the sport and what he gets out of it. Then Okubo shows up, there’s an interesting exchange of words, and the two suit up for some fencing practice. It goes about as well for Okubo as you might expect.
Then the two sit down in front of Soulcalibur VI, and Chamley-Watson gives some lip service to one Soulcalibur VI character in particular, Raphael. Raphael is a fencer. According to this Olympic-level athlete, he has a lot of parallels to real life techniques in his moveset, albeit exaggerated for the sake of spectacle.
Okubo goes on to say that fencing isn’t the only real life inspiration for Raphael’s moveset, as it also incorporates movement taken from Spanish bullfighting and Flamenco dancing.
Soulcalibur VI is set to launch on October 19, 2018.
