Publishing juggernaut 2K, most known for NBA 2k, has launched 2K Foundations: an organization dedicated to “support[ing] under-served communities across the nation by refurbishing basketball courts in neighborhoods that need them the most.” But as any real or virtual sports fan knows, it’s never just about the game. 2K Foundations is taking that mindset to heart and also “provid[ing] essential technology upgrades in local community centers that will enable STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education programming for youth.”
The plan is to refurbish 12 basketball courts and provide resources across multiple United States cities, “including Cincinnati, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Chicago and Cleveland within its first year.”
See how 2K stepped up on and off the court in Baltimore:
2K Foundations even teamed up with Volo City Kids to provide a free, seven week long Basketball clinic for the Goodnow Pal Center in Baltimore. A similar video is live on their YouTube channel featuring Cincinnati. Clearly, new courts are just the beginning.
2K Foundations isn’t alone in this venture, as Microsoft has agreed to partner with 2K and provide support by “outfitting Xbox One S gaming stations and other equipment in each of the locations.”
Jason Argent, Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations for NBA 2K, said the organization was inspired by both the basketball and NBA 2K community:
Basketball has been so good to us, and we want to pay it forward to the communities that need it most, by helping to enhance the lives of youth both on the court and in the classroom.
