EA and Dice Teasing With Battlefield V Airborne Mode

Battlefield 5 Airborne Mode coming

That’s right, for the past several weeks we’ve been teased with so many Battlefield V teasers and now it looks as though we’ll be getting even more teasers about teasers. All joking aside, today EA and DICE have unveiled some tidbits regarding a multiplayer mode that’s coming to the multiplatform shooter, Battlefield V.

They’re calling it the Airborne Mode and it will see players parachuting into the thick of combat by plane. Apparently, this won’t be yet another battle royale thing. Contrary to that, this mode is going to offer objective-based attack/defend mechanics.

We do not have any more details on this, other than the following tweet:

Okay, so both EA and DICE seem very eager to spill as much beans as they can about Battlefield V, before the E3 2018 festivities kick off.

We recently learned that Battlefield V will include microtransactions for cosmetic items only. In the meantime, check out the trailer for Battlefield V.

The game is officially going to be released on October 13 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

PlayStation E3 2018 Theater

E3 2018 is right around the corner, which means that a lot of major companies will be hosting conferences in order to showcase some of their biggest games. While Sony may be switching up their style this year, they’ll still be hosting a briefing of sorts on Monday, June 11, and as they’ve done for the last couple of years, they’ll be inviting fans to join them in movie theaters located all the around the world.

According to the company over on the PlayStation Blog, Sony will once again be broadcasting its E3 Showcase live to theaters located in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and – for the first time – Chile. Attendees who make the shows will receive an exclusive poster and “some other goodies” while also being gifted various digital goods thanks to the Experience PlayStation app, so make sure to download it before you arrive if you’re able to snag a ticket.

Speaking of, tickets will be free and are available starting on Tuesday, June 5 at 11 am PDT. Generally, these tickets go pretty fast, so you’ll want to check the PlayStation Blog for a link to tickets as fast as possible on that date. Creators of Resistance Teasing With New VR Game, Full Reveal Next Week

Insomniac Games VR game coming

Insomniac Games is really busy at the moment. For one thing, they have directed all of their energy and focus on the upcoming PS4 exclusive Spider-Man. Today, the developers over at Insomniac have teased with a new VR title in their “developer spotlight” that speaks of the team’s history. Before we go any further discussing Insomniac Games’ VR game, you might want to recollect their track record.

Remember, these are the folks that brought us games like Ratchet & Clank, and the Resistance series.

Now, we do not know much about this new VR title. What we do know is that the project is definitely being made for the Oculus Rift and that the studio intends to reveal it next week, June 7, 2018. Oculus Rift, of course, means that the game is PC-bound, albeit there is a solid chance Sony will snatch this for PlayStation VR. After all, Insomniac Games has been involved with so many games for the PlayStation platform in the past.

“We’re always challenging ourselves to try something that we’ve never done before,” said an Insomniac Games developer states in the new dev spotlight released today.

Check out the video below:

If that’s not enough for ya, here’s a bullet point of focuses from the games that were discussed in the video, before they teased with the VR game (courtesy of Shacknews):

  • “Weapons that push the envelope”
  • “Interesting movement”
  • “Spaces that really compel people to explore” (Ratchet & Clank)
  • A playground to move around at breakneck speeds (Sunset Overdrive)
  • VR traversal “in a way that couldn’t be done before” (Edge of Nowhere)
  • Shift to a first-person scheme, the full body movement tracking for opponents (Unspoken)
  • Community outreach will be a strong focal point
  • The new VR game has the tagline “Reclaim Your World.”

So, people, any ideas as to what this might be? Personally, I’d love to see a brand new Resistance game.

Report: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Logo Leaked, Set in Ancient Greece

Assassins Creed Odyssey

It looks like Assassin’s Creed might be back on a yearly schedule, if a new leak is anything to go by. French gaming website Jeux Video Live obtained a picture of a keychain and its packaging, leaking the next Assassin’s Creed game before Ubisoft could officially announce it. The keychain is a Greek-style helmet and the packaging sports the logo for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. While Ubisoft has yet to officially announce Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, if this is a fake, it’s a pretty impressive one.

Jeux Video Live’s source sent the photo to reveal that Assassin’s Creed is headed to Ancient Greece, along with with title for the upcoming game. More importantly, this image seems to hint that we’ll be getting Assassin’s Creed Odyssey soon. It’s not likely that Ubisoft would be getting merch and swag ready just before E3 if Odyssey wasn’t 2018 game. Even if it is a 2019 game, expect this one to be one of the “surprises” Ubisoft reveals at E3, though it’s not much of a surprise anymore.

This leak matches with a rumor earlier this year that said the next Assassin’s Creed game would be in Greece, though it indicated a fall 2019 release for the title. That report had a lot going for it, including one of the developers having snapped a picture while on a trip to Greece. This new leak holds a lot more weight as we now have physical proof of the game’s title and setting.

The last game in the series was Assassin’s Creed Origins, released in 2017 after taking a year break to gain new footing for the franchise. That extra time led to Origins being widely considered the best Assassin’s Creed game released, breaking a lot of new ground.

Do you think Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will be released this year, or will Ubisoft reveal it at E3 nearly a year and half ahead of a fall 2019 release? Do you like the Greek setting? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Milanoir Review – An Offer You Can’t Refuse? (PS4)

Some say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and every now and then, they’re right. Milanoir touts itself as a tribute to cheesy ‘70s Italian crime films, the likes of which are “revered by Quentin Tarantino.” And in a way, it succeeds. Its action sequences and dialogue definitely drip with pulpy snark.

Thanks to this, Milanoir is entertaining but not always endearing—almost every other line has the protagonist, Piero, proclaim how cool he is and how little he cares. Even as the shade-wearing macho man commits some sincerely surprising and heinous crimes, his superiority complex never lets up. Yes, this writing is intentional, but that doesn’t make it any less grating.

Within the grand hierarchy of the mafia, Piero is content with being a hitman. He’s pretty good at it, and shootouts make up a solid majority of his story in Milanoir. These fights use a basic top-down combat system. You can hide behind waist-high props, then bounce up to pop a cap in an enemy when you need to. Though you’re armed with only a pistol (and very very occasionally find other short-lived weapons), Milanoir uses a fun ricochet system to make its fights a little more interesting.

Say Hello to My Little Street Sign

If you see a street sign, you can shoot it to bounce your bullet off the sign and instantly kill a nearby goon. More signs are later introduced and do different things. A triangle sign, for instance, will split your bullet in two, killing two enemies at once. Sometimes these blend in with the overly busy pixel-art backdrop, but thankfully, they also shine in the light every few seconds to make them a bit more noticeable. Still, tiny signs aren’t exactly easy to notice and shoot in a frenetic fire-fight.

Milanoir Review

It doesn’t help that Milanoir’s aiming system is clunky and awkward. A large, flashing reticle serves as your aim marker, and is surrounded by small marks that represent your bullets. This system probably works very well on PC, as it’s basically a giant mouse cursor. But on PS4, the reticle is moved with the right analog stick, and is alarmingly finicky. At the lowest sensitivity, it’s impossible to quickly aim when you’re surrounded. On the highest setting, it’s hard to fine-tune your shots. When you walk, your cursor moves with you, meaning that running and gunning turns everything around you into a moving target. The PS4 version also has an “aim assist” that will lock your cursor onto an enemy when you pass over one, but it doesn’t always work. Street signs—the small, shining stars in Milanoir’s combat—aren’t even recognized by this assist. This setting steers you away from one of the most enjoyable parts of the game. Most fights start with one sign, six or seven enemies, and next to no nearby cover. In such cases, Piero takes about three or four shots, then he’s six feet under.

This is all super aggravating in boss fights, where sign shooting, movement, and cover are equally important. Milanoir has some cool boss designs, a lot of which are completely undermined by the aiming system. Some fights slip by unscathed, such as an early motel gang shootout that morphs into a high-speed van chase. But in another battle, I had to simultaneously shoot at and run from a moving train. As it tried to ram me, I awkwardly shimmed my way into an adjacent alley. Next, I had to continue my escape on the tracks, while shooting at intermittent, moving street signs nearby. Any mistake—or even brief stop—meant that I would be mowed down by an Italian maniac in a death trap. What began as a genuinely fun concept soon turned to 20+ straight minutes of quick, repeated deaths.

Reviewer’s Note: To see what this boss fight looks like, check the last 5 minutes of the video above.

[[Show as slideshow]]

Pull Your Friend Back In, Too

These deaths sting marginally less when experienced alongside a friend. Milanoir has co-op, and though your run resets if either player dies, it’s still a fun way to lighten the mood. Playing with a friend evokes the same vibe as marathoning dreadfully over-the-top action movies. Not many recent games capture this feeling, so it was a nice surprise here. Whether the game was truly intended for this, who knows, but that atmosphere is another positive to tie the experience together.

Milanoir provides pleasure in its own roundabout, corny, lighthearted way. Sure, its combat is very obtuse, awkward, and confounding. I became emotionally detached from Piero as his dense, cocky attitude drained my soul. But with a few neat mechanics and a well-rendered art style, this whimsical crime-film imitation flatters some of its ancestors and lightly entertains with the same campy charm.

PS Plus Instant Game Collection vs Xbox Live Games With Gold for June 2018

PS Plus vs games with gold

The PlayStation Plus free titles and Xbox Live Games with Gold have been announced for June 2018. It’s time to pit the collections against each other to see which console comes out on top with June’s offerings. Welcome to PS Plus vs Games with Gold!

Let’s take a look at the contestants. First up, the PS Plus Instant Game Collection.

Next, here are the Xbox Games with Gold that you can grab on Microsoft’s platform next month.

PS Plus Free Games June 2018

Sony heads up the PlayStation Plus lineup for June with one of the best and most difficult strategy games of all time. XCOM 2 is a notoriously punishing game, but is the kind of tactical experience other studios only wish they could replicate. The only thing holding XCOM 2 back when we reviewed it was a messy technical presentation, but the game is so good, it managed to shine right through any the occasional frame stutters and long loading times. There have been some massive expansions released to XCOM 2 that make it almost an entirely new game, so if you like what you play, you can extend your experience.

Trials Fusion is a fun game that’s easy to pick up and play in short bursts, but has a pretty sharp learning curve to nail some of the mot difficult courses. It’s a side-scrolling, platformer, stunt-racing game, again with few games that can truly compete with its particular style. The ability to quickly start and restart a level means that those short bursts can turn into hours and hours of trying to perfect a single track. Trials also has a number of expansions, so you can challenge yourself with near countless (alright, they can be counted, whatever) courses.

On the PS3 side, we’ve got two games this month. We really enjoyed Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier when we reviewed it back in 2012, but it will be interesting to see how well the game has aged over the last six years. A lot of other shooters have come out in that time and it may not hold up like it used to. Zombie Driver HD is another 2012 game with middling scores at best, so it really feels like yet another consolation prize, rather than any real reason to subscribe to PS Plus.

For the Vita, Sony is offering Atomic Ninjas and Squares. Neither have amazing reviews, but if you’ve still got a Vita that you play regularly and are looking for a couple of games to add to your collection, these are both definitely games that can be played on a Vita. Once again, with titles like these, it makes complete sense as to why Sony would be discontinuing Vita and PS3 support for the Plus Instant Game Collection next March. Sony’s basically dropped support for these platforms from Plus already.

None of the games are cross-platform this month, so that means you get your two PS4 games, two PS3 games, and two Vita games. If you’re only after what’s available on the PS4, XCOM 2 and Trials Fusion are your games for the month.

Xbox Live Games with Gold June 2018

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia is the headliner for June’s Games with Gold, and with how much Microsoft has been releasing Assassin’s Creed games on this platform, I’d be willing to bet they have a pretty strong deal with Ubisoft to put them all out there. Unfortunately the Chronicles side games for the series were never all that great, so this isn’t a massive inclusion for the month. I’m sure players will have fun playing it, but it’s not the same as adding one of the better received mainline games.

The next major entry is an odd one, considering it is a free-to-play MOBA. Smite: Gold Bundle allegedly has a $99 value, and as far as we can tell will simply be a bunch of premium items in the game to help kickstart and get people playing the free-to-play title. PlayStation Plus had a similar promotion back in December, but it was an extra bonus rather than one of the free games up for grabs. For this month’s Games with Gold, the Smite bundle takes the place of one of the Xbox One games.

Perhaps pairing with the announcement of the upcoming Team Sonic Racing, one of the Xbox 360 backwards compatible games this month is Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. it was a well received arcade kart-racer that was full of nostalgia and classic Sega characters. I’m actually more excited to see this old Xbox 360 game on the list than either of the main Xbox One entries.

The final Xbox 360 backwards compatible game for June is LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues. While it might have marked a low point in LEGO games overall, it should still be a fun little adventure to go back to now that Xbox One owners have the opportunity to play it for free.

All four Games with Gold June games are playable on the Xbox One.

Which Lineup is Better?

June is a tough month. Sony arguably has the best single game on the list with XCOM 2, and Trials Fusion isn’t a shabby addition. Where they falter is in the PS3 and Vita selection, none of which are cross-compatible with the PS4. For PS4 owners, that means only two games this month, though the two games in question are great additions to anyone’s collection. PS3 and Vita owners get left with a few consolation prizes once again, a trend that will probably continue until March 2019 ends support for them.

Microsoft has more range with their four total games playable on Xbox One, but the addition of a premium pack fro a free-to-play MOBA is an odd choice to take up one of those coveted slots. The Xbox games certainly aren’t bad by any means, but of all the games I would choose to play, XCOM 2 and Trials Fusion would beat out any of the four games on Microsoft’s list.

The PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection is regularly dragged down by the “mandatory” and low-effort entries to the PS3 and Vita sections, which takes away from the highlights of the obviously better PS4 offerings. Microsoft also shot themselves in the foot by using a full game slot to offer a free-to-play game bonus pack, rather than shuffling it off as a side bonus like Sony has done in the past. Despite this, Sony just managed to eke out a victory this month with two great and unique PS4 titles that are better than anything Microsoft is offering.

Wondering how July’s lineups will fare next to one another? Come back next month when we pit the newly announced free games lineups against one another in PS Plus vs Games with Gold. Do you agree with our verdict? Which lineup do you think is better?
