PS3 Shooter Starhawk’s Online Features to Shut Down Today

starhawk game

In an unannounced move, LightBox Interactive’s and Sony Santa Monica Studio’s Starhawk will have its online features permanently disabled today. This development was noted by Reddit users who found a brief disclaimer that was quietly added to the game’s PlayStation Store page, stating:

Multiplayer features for Starhawk will be terminated and no longer be available after June 30th, 2018. The single-player campaign and any other offline content will continue to be playable.

Although not surprising, it’s unusual for Sony to not make an announcement or add games awaiting closure to its Decommissioned Servers list, which currently includes shutdown notices for games like MotorStorm Apocalypse and Modnation Racers that released before Starhawk.

For those not familiar with it, the third-person shooter released in 2012 to positive reviews overall, featuring 32-player online battles and offline/online co-op modes. The single-player campaign follows the story of hired gun Emmett Graves who is tasked with preventing savage-like mutants known as Outcasts from destroying his home, all while bringing an outlaw to justice. Graves has quite the arsenal of high-tech weapons at his disposal alongside vehicles including the Razorback 4×4, Ox Heavy Tank, and Sidewinder Jet Bike. The conflict centers around Rift Energy, the exposure to which transforms humans into Outcasts.

Are any of our readers still playing Starhawk?

Bethesda’s Todd Howard Wanted Fallout 76 Cross-Play, But Says It’s ‘Not Possible’

Sonic The Hedgehog Movie to Star Jim Carrey as Robotnik

sonic the hedgehog movie

In what might be one of the greatest masterstrokes of casting in our time, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has found its lead villain. Jim Carrey is playing Dr. Robotnik AKA Doctor Eggman.

Deadline reports that Carrey, of The Mask and Ace Ventura fame, is in line to be the yin to Sonic’s yang when the live-action/CGI movie hybrid hits cinemas in 2019. Westworld‘s James Marsden has also signed up for a lead role but, at this point, all eyes are squarely on Jim Carrey to chew up the scenery as much as director Jeff Fowler will allow.

Beyond that, little is known about the Sonic the Hedgehog movie story or cast. Heck, even Deadline gets its Robotnik and Eggmans mixed up within the first paragraph. For clarification: they’re the same person, but Sonic’s nemesis has carried the name Eggman (to go along with his rotund figure) since way back in 1999’s Sonic Adventure. Even more confusingly, he’s always been referred to as Eggman in Japan, with only the West adopting the name Robotnik. What’s that, Paul Rudd is in too? Sure, why not.

But that’s not the story here. Jim freakin’ Carrey is playing Dr. Robotnik, He’s going toe-to-toe with the blue blur next year. Screw Avengers 4, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie may have just topped the lot with this riotous, utterly ridiculous piece of casting. What next? Nic Cage as Knuckles?

Let us know some of your dream castings below but, honestly, if it’s even as tenth as good as the real life thing, I’ll be impressed. 2018 just does not stop.

Temtem is the Latest Game With Cross-Play Everywhere Except PS4

temtem cross-play

The biggest story of June 2018, due to a series of key events including multiple comments from Sony, has been cross-play. While Microsoft and Nintendo are publicly supporting the idea, Sony has continued to leave the PS4 out of the conversation. Fuel continues to be added to that fire, and the latest is from a Pokemon-inspired MMO game called Temtem. As you’d expect, Temtem cross-play is allowed across all planned platforms, with the exception of PlayStation 4.

Temtem, a Kickstarter-funded game from Spanish developer De Crema, smashed its goal by hundreds of thousands of dollars, and is expanding to consoles as a result. An early stretch goal was aiming for the Switch in addition to PC, but eventually the team was able to confirm PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions as well. Being an online game, De Crema of course intends to implement cross-play and cross-save, but notes backers will have to “take into account that some platforms don’t allow that (PS4).”

Sony can’t overhaul its systems overnight, but every time something like this comes out, it’s going to keep the discussion at the forefront. Temtem isn’t planned for release until May 2020 at the moment, so a lot can change until then, it’s also, ostensibly, a smaller game (especially compared to the likes of Fortnite). But based on the Kickstarter numbers it definitely has an audience, and considering the developer itself getting cheeky about the situation, it’ll be interesting to see how much impact Temtem has in this particular battle.
