Fallout 76 B.E.T.A. Extended for Everyone After PC Issues

fallout 76 beta extended

The Fallout 76 B.E.T.A. test period has begun, and has even spread out further than the Xbox One, which got a bit of a head start. Unfortunately, as Bethesda warned, there were some issues, particularly with the PC version. As one of the issue severely impacted folks’ ability to play the game, Bethesda has opted to extend the B.E.T.A. period not just for PC players, but for everyone.

The issue in question was a massive bug that caused the Fallout 76 executable file to actually delete the whole 50+ GB install, which is just not fun at all for anyone involved. Because games are this size and not everyone has awesome internet connections, this caused many fans to miss out on pretty much a whole day of B.E.T.A. access. Here is Bethesda’s official response and announcement, via Twitter:

Because the B.E.T.A. is happening in chunks instead of having it live constantly through its duration, the net gain here is really only a few hours. However, since it’s being tacked on to a different day, that’ll give the fans some breathing room to come back later instead of scrambling to get the game installed. Not bad.

Bandai Namco Conjures Up New Information on The Dark Pictures – Man of Medan

the dark pictures trailer

Bandai Namco is in the Halloween mood! To celebrate, it just dropped a whole lot of new information on its upcoming Dark Pictures anthology. The first entry, Man of Medan, is set to release in 2019. Similar to developer Supermassive Game’s Until Dawn, your choices influence everything.

Bandai Namco also dropped a new trailer for Man of Medan, which you can see here:

Unlike Until Dawn, which bounced between eight playable characters, Man of Medan will feature a single “primary playable character,” Conrad, performed by Shawn Ashmore (X-Men). It doesn’t outright state there won’t be more than one character you control, but it looks like Man of Medan will primarily be told from one point-of-view.

In addition, a brand-new character was revealed: The Curator. While entries in The Dark Pictures won’t be interconnected, The Curator is “an ever-present part of each chilling experience.” The Curator is portrayed by Pip Torress (The Crown) and is poised to play an integral role in the series.

Here’s the official description of The Curator:

The Curator is timeless and has been recording stories of life and death for thousands of years. Starting with Man of Medan, for reasons he can’t quite understand, the Curator has been given the opportunity to talk to somebody—the player.

He knows that there are “rules.” He’s not supposed to interfere, but he’s excited and can get a little carried away. He has seen things that the player has probably missed—important things. But he’s not permitted to tell them what these things are…directly. So, he drops hints where he can, hoping that the player will recognize his brilliance in hindsight. But don’t expect him to be straightforward; his hints can be somewhat cryptic.

The Dark Pictures – Man of Medan doesn’t have a release date yet, but is slated for 2019. It will be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

The Last of Us Part II Designer Calls It ‘Freakin’ Unreal’

the last of us part 2 hype

Barring Outbreak Day content and a soundtrack sample, Naughty Dog has been quiet about The Last of Us Part II since its E3 2018 gameplay reveal. It’s with good reason, though. No one wants to see too much before the sequel’s eventual launch. However, that doesn’t mean teasing of some fashion isn’t welcomed. According to a vague tease from a Naughty Dog game designer, The Last of Us‘ next outing is “freakin’ unreal.”

Designer Asher Einhorn shared the sentiment on his personal Twitter account.

What prompted Einhorn’s exclamation of enthusiasm remains unknown. Truthfully, he could be lauding any number of things, like its gameplay, animations, acting, or story. Perhaps Einhorn’s statement refers to the overall experience? Regardless, this serves as but another hint that, akin to its acclaimed predecessor, The Last of Us Part II may mark an impressive milestone in entertainment.

Because Sony isn’t hosting PSX this year, we’re left to wonder when Naughty Dog plans to show more of its latest project. Of course, The Game Awards, which takes place on December 6th, counts as one possibility. The Kinda Funny Games Showcase may provide another. By year’s end, we’ll know whether new details for The Last of Us are coming sooner rather than later.

Happy Birthday to Nolan North

nolan north

I mean, Gary Oldman, one of the greatest actors on the planet, did Call of Duty. He wouldn’t have done it 10 years ago. It’s a new age dawning, and I’m just really proud to be part of it.

Nolan North, born 48 years ago today, played more than just a “part” in the new age of video game acting. Known for roles such as Nathan Drake in Uncharted, Desmond Miles in Assassin’s Creed, and Ghost in Destiny, North has established himself as one of the most iconic voice actors in the video game industry as we know it today. As a birthday present, we’re going to look at why that’s important.

The quotation that opens this piece echoes something that the inimitable Andy Serkis once said:

Every age has its storytelling form, and video gaming is a huge part of our culture. You can ignore or embrace video games and imbue them with the best artistic quality. People are enthralled with video games in the same way as other people love the cinema or theater.

nolan north

This is largely something that can be attributed to the incredible performances of actors who bring video game characters to life. Serkis is an interesting person to refer to here, as his motion-capture performances as Gollum from The Lord of the Rings and Caesar from Planet of the Apes have been met with much controversy. Despite his incredible performance as Gollum, Serkis never won an Oscar due to the fact that it was a different kind of acting.

Now, years later, motion-capture is recognized as something that requires a wealth of extraordinary talent to execute properly. Serkis, who is also an established theater actor, has no issue acting outside of motion-capture. He can do what others do, but not everyone can do what he can. We can apply the same principles to video game acting; on one hand, the motion-capture mechanics resemble that of animated or computer-generated sequences from film, but the animations need to correspond with the input of the player. Therefore, the acting must be absolutely flawless, lest the movements look out of place, thus breaking the immersion.

On another level, video game acting has to be expressive enough in terms of intonation in order for players to feel that the voice reflects the choices that they make. If a player chooses an option on a dialogue wheel, poor voice acting will leave them dissatisfied. Voice actors in games need to act as a character that is capable of communicating multiple emotions depending on the current set of permutations, especially in the RPGs of today. Each character contains multiple personalities  and needs to account for multitudinous yet not simultaneous modes of expression. On this, North said, “I’m an actor. Whether I’m on stage, in front of a camera or a microphone, what I do is the same—although with video games it requires a lot of imagination.

nolan north

So what “part” did North play in the establishment of video game acting as a new and innovative form of acting in general? Well, a pretty huge one, actually. The man’s list of credits speaks for itself in relation to his insane output, but it’s the consistency of quality throughout his career that marks him as an iconic figure in the industry. For 19 years, North has been producing high quality video game performances, managing to establish himself as a video game celebrity in the process alongside the likes of Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson.

The fact that Nolan North is so instantly recognizable as David in The Last of Us and Hades in God of War helps to establish the importance of the role of a video game actor, something that wasn’t always the case. Although Serkis’ quotation draws attention to the gravity of games as a contemporary form today, this leap is one that is tied to relatively recent events. On one occasion, North said, “I revel in my anonymity. But when I’m at a specific event and gamers are there, they’ll recognize me.

nolan north

A famous actor for traditional cinema would be instantly recognized; anonymity is not an option. However, the fact that people who play games are invested enough in North’s performances to have learned enough about him to recognize him highlights the main way in which respect was bestowed upon the role of video game acting. North established himself as a famous video game actor, and thus the comparison between games acting and the theater acting that Serkis talks about came to be. Video game acting became an art, reserved for incredibly talented and passionate people. These people became celebrities, which helped to make the industry gain attention and subsequently respect as a whole.

The reason that actors like Sean Bean, Charles Dance, and Gary Oldman have worked in the games industry is because the actors in the industry have proved themselves to be incredibly skilled people. For traditional actors, video games acting poses a new challenge that’s radically different to acting on screen. It’s become an art in itself, and likely wouldn’t have become so if people hadn’t committed themselves to it in the way in which Nolan North did.

The reason that games have began to establish themselves as an important contemporary form is largely due to the wealth of talent pumped into them by the people who act in them—the people like Nolan North. If not for him, our age’s form of storytelling wouldn’t be quite as magical as it is.

Dragon Ball FighterZ Sales Numbers Top 3.5 Million

dragon ball fighterz sales numbers

Looks like Bandai Namco and Arc System Works have a hit on is hands. Less than a year out from its launch, DragonBall FighterZ‘s total sales have topped 3.5 million units. The official DragonBall FighterZ Twitter account made the announcement, saying the numbers are for combined worldwide shipments and digital downloads.

Back in February 2018, Bandai Namco announced that its fighting game had reached 2 million units sold. It also had record-breaking Twitch viewership during EVO 2018.

Support for Dragon Ball FighterZ has been strong in the months since its January 2018 launch. The most recent fighter, Android 17, was released in September 2018. He was the last of the leaked fighters that were discovered in March 2018. However, with the sales success the fighter has seen, it’s not hard to imagine even more Dragon Ball characters being introduced.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, it looks like DragonBall FighterZ has a long life ahead of it. However, while we wait for another entry, Dragon Ball will have a major presence in 2019’s Jump Force. Goku, Frieza, and Vegeta are all confirmed for the manga crossover fighting game. All three are also playable in Dragon Ball FighterZ, as well.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
