Fortnite is the game that has been dominating headlines for the past year. From Fortnite tutors to boob physics, even the most minute details have become massive stories. It has an equally-massive player count, at a whopping 78 million people hopping into games. However, it seems that there’s one game that blows it out of the water. Minecraft, the blocky sandbox game that just won’t stop, has over 90 million active players.
The number came from Helen Chiang, Studio Head of Minecraft (which is owned by Microsoft). Player counts came up when Chiang was discussing a possible Minecraft 2 with Business Insider, noting that large player base is precisely why we won’t see a Minecraft sequel anytime soon. “It’s always something that fractures the community,” she told the outlet. With over 90 million monthly players and counting, it’s understandable that Mojang and Microsoft wouldn’t want to separate that audience.
Just because Minecraft 2 isn’t happening (for now), doesn’t mean Microsoft isn’t looking to expand the Minecraft universe. Minecraft Dungeons, a Diablo-esque dungeon crawler, was announced at Minecon Earth 2018, though right now it’s a PC-only game. In addition, the dearly departed Telltale has the narrative-driven Minecraft: Story Mode. While we may not see a direct Minecraft sequel, the people behind it are looking to transplant it into other genres.
With Minecraft’s focus on community, it’s no wonder cross-play has become a big talking point, too. Microsoft has recently said it “would love” to bring cross-play to the PlayStation 4, following Sony’s reversal on the issue back in September 2018. As of right now, nothing is planned.
