Indie puzzler Manifold Garden has been, according to Kotaku’s Nathan Grayson, breaking brains since it was first revealed back in 2014. The M.C. Escher-inspired game – initially named after the Dutch painter’s 1953 painting, Relatively – has been in development for a few years, but Manifold Garden seems to be closer to release. Now, in an interview with YouTube channel Downhill Media, the game’s creator, William Chyr, has revealed that the game will be launching sometime in late 2018 or early 2019.
In a series of videos called Artsplained, a weekly comedy show focused on art by Downhill Media, Chyr sat down to chat about his upcoming mindbending game. He told Artsplained, “I’m hoping that, one, [players] get a sense of feeling like a scientist, and explore to the unknown, that they walk away feeling like they went over this journey of discovery and mastery. And then I hope that through that they gain an appreciation of how the world works.” With gravity being in the control of the player, Chyr hopes his implementation of what he calls “counter-factual physics” will “bring back a sense of wonder for physics in our daily lives.”
At E3 2018, we had the chance to check it out. In our preview of the game, we said, “If you like puzzle games, Manifold Garden will be one that you’ll want to keep your eye on. And if you’re at all curious about the process of game development, and want an [eye-opening] look into what it takes to make a game, squash bugs, wrestle with creative quandaries, and just decide what aspect to work on next, I highly recommend reading Williams Chyr’s blog. It’s like being a fly on the wall of the whole development process; a rare look that we don’t often get to see with games.”
Manifold Garden will be available for Linux, Mac, PC, and PlayStation 4.
