Resident Evil 2 Remake’s Difficulty Adjusts for Player Performance

Resident Evil 2 remake difficulty

The Resident Evil 2 remake still has some fans pinching themselves. It’s hard to believe such a project is in production and close to completion. With the remake’s reveal came a myriad of questions, many of which remain unanswered. But a recent interview with producers Yoshiaki Hirabayashi and Tsuyoshi Kanda features interesting new details. One bit of information concerns the game’s difficulty settings.

Asked by VG24/7 if there’s a balance between the difficulty of a game from the 1990s and what modern gamers expect, Hirabayashi reveals,

“In terms of the standard difficulty, it does adjust based on player performance. I’d like to believe that you were doing really well and so the difficulty ramped up even more. But we have it tuned so that no matter how well you’re doing, there’s always going to be that sense of dread and tension there.

“Also, we are definitely implementing things that assist the player if they choose to utilize that stuff such as auto game. If a player thinks, hey, I’d rather have an easier time going through this, we will have those sorts of options as well.”

Kanda adds,

“There’s also having the limitation of the ink ribbons. Even with the higher difficulty we do have the ink ribbons with a limited number of uses for those who really want a true challenge, as well.”

It’s worth noting that the adaptive difficulty has been present in the series since Resident Evil 4. If players easily breeze through areas, the game raises the difficulty. For instance, enemies become more aggressive and deal additional damage. Even drop rates for ammunition and resources are affected. Tying challenge to player performance in Resident Evil 2 is sure to increase the game’s tension when facing all manner of zombies and mutant creatures.
Resident Evil 2’s remake hits store shelves on January 25, 2019.
