Cyberpunk 2077′s gameplay reveal became a hot topic the moment it made its public debut. Even with the fanfare, developer CD Projekt RED still felt “uneasy” about making this footage public. Ultimately, it’s a game that that still has a long period of development left, and as such, many things are up in the air.
Quest Designer Patrick Mills used that exact word when he talked to IGN about Cyberpunk 2077. When it came to the E3 2018 gameplay reveal, he said, “We felt a little uneasy [revealing the footage], but the demand was high enough, so we’re putting it out there.” He also issued the reminder that this game is “deep in development, and elements are subject to change.” While CD Projekt Red’s current build can be played from start to finish in a basic way, it is still a work in progress.
Level Designer Miles Tost also shared his thoughts on Cyberpunk 2077. He said, “We feel that when we show something to the public, it’s basically like committing to what we’re showing, be it gameplay and mechanics, the art, the storytelling, the quests.” The concern comes down to offering a look at something that could eventually change between the current build and the eventual final product.
Of course, any CD Projekt Red game following The Witcher 3 might come with high expectations. It’s easy to understand the developer wanting to err on the side of caution. Now that Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay is out in the wild, we can analyze what is there now and eventually see what changes when the game releases.
