Spelunky 2‘s latest trailer makes the game look as cute and intense as ever. One of the first things fans may notice is the more vibrant and modern, style of the game. The sequel also has adorable creatures to ride, online multiplayer, and a vibrant cast of characters: Ana Spelunky, Margaret Tunnel, Colin Northward, and Roffy D. Sloth.
Let’s watch the new Spelunky 2 footage!
Along with this video, the PlayStation Blog posted a brief interview with Spelunky Creator Derek Yu. Don’t expect Spelunky 2 to reinvent the wheel. Instead, this sequel aims to improve the formula. And more of the same isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Yu addressed this, stating:
Spelunky 2 is not too different, actually. My opinion about sequels is that they are extensions of the previous games, so I want fans of Spelunky 1 to jump in and feel like they’re playing a continuation, both storywise and mechanically. The big question on my mind was “What makes Spelunky, Spelunky?” I wanted to figure out what those ideas were and take them to their limit without anything getting in their way. Sometimes that means adding, sometimes that means remixing–it can also mean subverting expectations created by the original game.
While fans should feel right at home when playing Spelunky 2, the team has “added liquid physics that are really fun to play with–combined with the destructible terrain [which results in] things like dynamic water or lavafalls that you have to deal with on each run. The world breathes more. And then there’s all the expected new areas, items, monsters, and traps.”
At the same time, Spelunky 2 is meant to appeal to newcomers. There will be more of a focus on the world and its story, rather than funneling energy into tutorials. “Spelunky 2 will have very strong themes of family and friendship and I want new players to feel cared for even as we put tough obstacles in their way.”
Spelunky 2 is set to arrive in 2019, and it will arrive first on the PlayStation 4 and Steam. It will be playable at the PlayStation booth at PAX West 2018.
