Onimusha Is Back From the Dead With a Warlords Remaster

During a recent earnings report from Capcom, a representative was quoted as saying the developer, perhaps motivated by the early response to Resident Evil 2, is looking to revive, remake, or remaster Capcom’s dormant IPs. After that went out, I thought about how cool it would be to see Onimusha come back. Now, that is exactly what’s on the table. Capcom has fully unveiled a remaster of the original Onimusha: Warlords, which already has a release date of January 15, 2019 and a price point of $19.99.

Onimusha: Warlords is largely a “remaster,” which is a word with no solid meaning, but in this case can be taken as an update that doesn’t make significant changes under the hood. This is an HD update to the original PS2 game, albeit with an impressive list of bells and whistles that should help such a dated title find its footing in 2019, especially for those who haven’t played it before.

For example, among the announced  Onimusha: Warlords features are a new easy difficulty (the original Onimusha is real tough) and a new control scheme much like what was added to Resident Evil HD Remaster. You can also swap the game’s aspect ratio back and forth from 4:3 and 16:19 on the fly (with some limitations), and the music and Japanese voice acting have both been re-recorded. There’s even a new background scrolling function that was added to make sure widescreen doesn’t make the whole thing wig out.

Preorders aren’t live yet, but Onimusha: Warlords will have a physical edition on both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. The game will also be available digitally on the Nintendo Switch and the PC. However, in Europe, it’s digital-only across the board.
