Square Enix recently announced a Dragon Quest Builders 2 livestream event that would reveal the Japanese release date, among other big details. We now know the game is releasing over there on December 20, 2018 for both the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch, but that’s not the most interesting news of the event. The involvement of another developer is.
What stood out most, at least to me to me, is that Square Enix revealed Koei Tecmo, the developer most known for the Dynasty Warriors (Musou) series, will be assisting with development this time around. Koei Tecmo has branched out to Dragon Quest before, and is helping here to make the action parts of the game more substantial. (They were notably simple, to put it one way, in the first game)
In addition to the release date and the Koei Tecmo news, the livestream had a big focus on stuff you could buy or earn for buying. This is all subject to change when Dragon Quest Builders 2 makes its way west, but there are several different bits of DLC you get for buying the game digitally, buying launch prints physically, retailer exclusives, and more. I mean, 7-Eleven doesn’t sell games around these parts, so there are bound to be changes.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 will also be making an appearance at Tokyo Game Show 2018, where a playable build will be making its debut. Square Enix will also be holding a stage event at the show, which will include more information.
The stream, which is embedded above, contains chunks of gameplay footage, including the game’s opening movie and first 20 minutes.
