Fortnite Summer Skirmish Grand Finalist Determined by the Flip of a Coin

Fortnite coin flip

Today has the Fortnite Summer Skirmish grand finals: a competition that boils down to 99 players fighting for the championship title and a $225,000 grand prize. Fortunately for competitors, everyone who has reached this stage will take home at least $5,000. But getting to the grand finals was no easy feat. In fact, the last place slot (on the last day of qualifiers) came down to a tie between The_Real_Cryohme and SSG Colton which was resolved with a coin flip.

Both players tied in every category across the board. It was extremely unlikely but in sports anything can happen, and esports proved its no exception. Epic Games never planned for such an unlikelihood so they went for a quick fix: a coin toss. It was heads for Colton, tails for Cryohme. The coin flip was executed with a traditional flick of the thumb and a toss in the air. Just like in football, the coin was allowed to fall naturally on the ground to avoid any gripes regarding interference. The result was tails, with Cryohme advancing to the grand finals and automatically taking home at least five grand.

After all that work the fates of  The_Real_Cryohme and SSG Colton were left up to chance. Hopefully Epic Games puts additional clauses to account for all the possibilities. With an esport this young, these growing pains are unfortunately part of the process. I guess the only morality in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased. Unprejudiced. Fair.
